A common question is: What is the best gun for dove hunting? This is not an easy answer and Los Gauchos says any shotgun that you are comfortable with, know, and you have practiced shooting sporting clays is the best shotgun for any kind of bird hunting - no matter where you are - dove hunting in Texas or dove hunting in Uruguay.
Los Gauchos supplies 20 gauge shotguns for the dove hunting trips. We provide Benelii semi-autos and Berettas - some of the lodges have a stock of guns that give you the chance to try a new type of shotgun. For instance, 28 gauge guns or over and unders, have been seen in the fields of Uruguay and many wing-shooters will claim these are the best shotguns for dove hunting in Uruguay.
It is one of the most exciting hunts and Los Gauchos makes it easy to prove Uruguay is some of the best bird hunting in the world. In South America, the dove changes its direction in a couple of seconds, which requires the hunter to have a precise shot and quick, accurate reaction time. Los Gauchos does not offer 28 gauge shotguns for our dove hunting trips - however, we have wing-shooters who bring their favorite 28-gauge and Los Gauchos makes a special order for the highest quality 28 gauge shotgun shells. Los Gauchos carries the brand Federal and SAGA. Higher rates than the 20 gauge ammo - but worth it. Be wary of "free shells" especially in Uruguay.
You may get some free shells, but why are you traveling to South America? To hunt doves and enjoy the lodge and country of Uruguay. It helps to have high quality hunting gear and dove hunting ammo.
One last tip for dove hunting trips. Take an afternoon and practice shooting sporting clays. Talk to others at the shooting club, more than likely someone has been to Uruguay or Cordoba and can share some insider secrets of the dove behavior in South America.
